Be a Real Guitar Hero: Foo Fighters - Everlong
To celebrate the release of both Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band 2, Today we bring you a lesson from a song that’s in both titles:
Tuning & Tone
The song uses dropped D tuning (DADGBE). Use the bridge pick-up with the tone knob on your guitar down to get the ‘muffled’ tone you hear. Don’t turn your bass up to high on the amp, or you’ll probably get too much buzz and ruin the sound.
Intro and Verse
The song uses pretty simple four-string power chords, with an added 9th on the 4th string. before the verse, the 2nd guitar alternates between usual power chord shapes and minor 7th shapes, creating some interesting tonalities. After that, the verse is the same as the intro.
Chorus
Some octaves outline the D major scale before the chorus, which is then followed by some regular power chords. Nothing too tricky here.
Other Notes
This a really fun song to play, and is very popular, in addition to being easy to learn. There aren’t any real tricky parts to it, and it uses a lot of riffing techniques common is most rock/alternative songs (simple melodies, power chords, octaves).
